Graduate PhD External Fellowship Policies

External fellowships must:

  • Be multi-year
  • Cover tuition and a significant portion of the stipend, at least equivalent to the funding amounts provided by NSF Graduate Fellowships (including stipend, tuition, and other fees).
  • Be externally funded, excluding internal sources such as development fellowships for recruitment, Presidential Fellowships, Dean’s Doctoral Fellows, Bridge Fellows, Ashton Fellows, etc.

Additional details:

  • The school will provide a one-time $3,000 stipend supplement to the Ph.D. student.
  • The school will cover any difference between the department’s stipend and the stipend provided by the external fellowship.
  • Recipients, whether incoming or current students, must begin using the fellowship upon receipt and cannot defer it to future years.

External fellowships can be stacked with internal fellowships in the following way:

Scenario

Stacking Mechanism

  • The student receives a $3K additional stipend paid by the school for external fellowship.
If the fellowship stipend is below department stipend, the school makes up the difference in the first year (if the student is school funded), and in subsequent years, the PI makes up the difference using their own funds.
Policy is similar whether the student is a Dean’s Doctoral Fellow or not. External fellowship tuition will relieve the school’s tuition expense coverage.
