Penn Engineering Master’s–PhD Integrated Pathway Program
Overview
The Penn Engineering Master’s–PhD Integrated Pathway Program provides outstanding master’s students with a streamlined path into doctoral study. Entry into this program is by faculty invitation only, highly competitive, and held to the exact same standards as the regular PhD process. The pathway is intended solely for exceptional master’s students who are already well prepared for doctoral-level work and have a strong fit with a Penn Engineering faculty advisor.
Application Process
Master’s students may not apply directly to this program. Instead, applications are initiated only when a Penn Engineering faculty advisor invites a student to be considered. Invited students may be nominated anytime from the end of their first year through graduation. Applications are reviewed monthly on a rolling basis and must include materials equivalent to a standard PhD application. Students who have received a faculty invitation may request an application link by emailing graduate-admissions@seas.upenn.edu and copying their faculty advisor, or including written confirmation of the faculty invitation. Alternatively, the faculty advisor may email Graduate Admissions directly to request an application link on the student’s behalf.
Entry Timing and Funding
Admitted students may begin doctoral studies the following semester with PI funding, or their advisor may defer the start until the next academic year (Fall). For funding purposes, all entrants are considered first-year PhD students, following standard departmental models that begin in the fall semester.
Coursework Recognition and PhD Term Counter
All graduate-level coursework completed during the master’s program is automatically credited toward the PhD. In addition, the PhD term-counter advances by one semester for every three master’s courses completed. This structure allows students to qualify for reduced tuition status earlier, typically after the tenth term counter.
